Sunday Funday

Another Sunday, another stack of assorted viewing options to subject on... err... I mean generously offer to my friends during my regular daybar shift. We have a couple new additions to my collection:

• Magic (1978), that I picked up from Encore Records in Ann Arbor. I'm completely in the dark about this psychological thriller/horror film beyond the description on the back, but seeing as it is starring Anthony Hopkins, Ann-Margaret, Burgess Meredith, and a potentially malicious ventriloquist dummy I figured it would be worth the gamble.
• Abraxas: Guardian of the Universe (1990), I recall seeing this bit of sci-fi schlock a while back (possibly as a Rifftrax episode?) I also don't have much of a recollection beyond it starring Jesse "The Balding" Ventura as SpaceCop. It certainly gets mentioned a lot in good-bad movie conversations so we shall see.
• Brain Dead (1990), which I also haven't seen yet, but the allure of having BOTH Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman in the same movie was a motivating factor in picking up. My friend had watched a while back and said it was merely "okay" which is somewhat disappointing but I'm willing to find out for myself.

Plus we have a few of the leftovers from last week we didn't get to:

• Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens (1979) We watched Russ Meyer's SuperVixens last week and it was a superbly silly avalanche of T&A, so I'm excited to give this one a watch.
• Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), Still haven't gotten to this one but perhaps this weekend is the time for this hagsploitation entry with Bette Davis and adapted from a story by the same author as What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. I just watched a couple of Shelley Winters gems, so I'm still on a bit of killer spinster kick.
  

And then we round things out with a couple of tried and true options:

• Vanishing Point (1971), one of the best car chase movies around!
  
• The Spine of Night (2021), either a knock off of or homage to the Heavy Metal movie and comics as well as the rotoscoping style of Ralph Bakshi. This is a really fun animated sci-fi fantasy anthology of intertwined tales connected by a mysterious and powerful magical plant.
  
• Fantastic Voyage (1966), because who doesn't want to see a shrunk down Donald Pleasence wrangling with antibodies inside a human body?
• The "Drunken Masters" martial arts collection rounds things out with plenty of kung-fu action suitable for dive bar viewing.

Let's see what we get into today at the 8 Ball Saloon. The bar opens at 3 p.m. and my shift ends around 9 p.m., so that is typically 4 movies out of the stack of 9.
